ABSTRACT:

In thispaper,weproposeanewsystemforautomaticallymeasuringgrainsizesinarangefrompebbles to blocks.ThesystemisbasedonuseoftheMicrosoftKinectdeviceandanovelsoftwaredevelopedby the authorswhichenablesatridimensionaldigitalmodelofaselectedareaofanoutcroptobecaptured. With thetridimensionalmodel,clastsarestackedusingnewsegmentationalgorithmsbasedonlevel sets andFourieranalysis.Theresultingbinaryimage(clastsandmatrix)isanalyzedbymeansofthe Rosiwalstereologicalmethod.ThegranulometricCumulativeDistributionFunction(CDF),obtained automaticallybythisnewmethodology,wascomparedtothegranulometricCDF,obtainedmanuallyby the Rosiwaltechnique,bymeansofaKolmogorov–Smirnov test.Thecomparisonshowedgood agreement betweenthemethodsanddemonstratedthatthisinexpensivesystem(alreadyusedin severalscientific fields) withgreatpotentialcanalsobeusedtoobtainfast,automaticandaccurategrain size distributionsofsedimentarydeposits.ThesoftwaretoolsusedtocontroltheKinectdevice,which providethethree-dimensionalelevationmodelsoftheoutcropsandallowsitsanalysis,arefreely availablefromtheauthor.
