Predicting the block-and-ash flow inundation areas at Volcán de Colima

ABSTRACT:

Mapsofareaspotentiallyaffectedbyblock-and-ash flowsandassociatedashcloudsareherepresentedfor theVolcándeColima.TITAN2D2.0.1codehasbeenusedtosimulateblock-and-ash flowsusingasaninput volumethatoftheactualsummitdome(assessedat2×106 m3 ),whiletheEnergyConemodelhasbeenused todelimitthepossibleinundatedareafromassociatedashclouds.BothMerapi-andSoufriere-typeblock- and-ash flowsweregeneratedusingdifferentbasalfrictionanglesandmaintaining fixedthevolumeandthe internalfrictionangle.Thesettingoftheinputparameterstakesintoaccountsome flowcharacteristics,such asthestepwiseaggradationofdifferentpulsesthatpileduptoformthetotalthicknessoftheblock-and-ash flowdeposits.Theoutputsofthecomputationalroutinesarereportedastwomapsdescribingthetotal thicknessofthe finaldeposits.Theypredictthatthickdepositswillengulftheravinesdescendingfromthe mainconetothewest,southandsoutheast,withexpectedmaximumrunoutsbetween4.5and7km.The associatedashcloudshaveslightlylongerrunouts,andthemodelpredictstheywillinundatesomehigher groundsthatarenotaffectedbytheconcentrateunderflows.Thepresentedmapsrepresentusefultoolsfor managingthecurrentblock-and-ash flowhazardatVolcándeColima. ©2010ElsevierB.V.Allrightsreserved.
