ABSTRACT:

In this work it was tried to take the advantages of using powder metallurgy processes to produce 2024 aluminum composite. TEM and SEM studies shown that the size of aluminum grains after mechanical alloying (MA) reached nanometric level while microhardness values were higher as MA time increased. In the hot extruded condition, it was found that Al2O3 nanoparticles were dispersed homogeneously trough aluminum microstructure and new phases were identified. Also, even that matrix nanometric grains suffer grain growth after thermal processing, the final size is considerably fine. Also, dislocations coming from different generation mechanisms such as thermal misfit and plastic deformation accommodation were found in the extruded composite microstructure. Finally it is thought that the combination of several parameters such as described have contributed to high mechanical tension and yield strength results that were obtained when nanoparticles quantity was increased.
